Age rules
Washington's child care and youth employment rules decide who can lead a class.
| Rule | Applies to |
|---|---|
| 18 or older to lead a class, be alone with children or count in a center's staff-to-child ratio | Lead coaches, mornings and afternoons |
| Assistant coach only: always beside an adult lead coach, with center staff in the room; never alone with children, never counted in ratio | Coaches aged 16 and 17 |
| School weeks: no work during school hours, at most 4 hours on a school day and 20 hours a week. School breaks and summer: up to 8 hours a day and 48 a week | Coaches aged 16 and 17 |
| Parent/School Authorization form on file, renewed every September 30 | Coaches aged 16 and 17 |
| No driving for work | Coaches aged 16 and 17 |
What every coach needs
Every coach, including assistant coaches under 18, completes these before the first class. The background check is free but can take about 45 days, so it starts as soon as a coach accepts an offer.
| Requirement | Cost | Renewal |
|---|---|---|
| DCYF Portable Background Check with fingerprints, cleared before the first class | Free; the state pays the fingerprint fee | Every 5 years, and again after leaving a job or 180 days away |
| STARS ID and MERIT account with DCYF | Free | Once |
| Adult and pediatric first aid and CPR, with live hands-on skills (American Red Cross, American Heart Association or HSI) | About $60 to $95 | Every 2 years |
| TB symptom screen and risk assessment signed by a licensed health care professional; a test only if the screen calls for one | Up to about $26 if a skin test is needed | Signed within 12 months before starting |
| Mandated reporter training and the DCYF health and safety modules | Free online | Not set by rule |
| Abuse prevention training (SafeSport or Abuse Prevention Systems), for the Company's abuse and molestation insurance | $8 to $20 | Every 12 months for SafeSport |
